Why should I care?
I mean, it’s the first game in a major pillar series of the fighting game scene.

Fists of iron

GAME CLEAR posts for old fighting games like these are always goofy. I’ve done a couple of them, and it’s always sort of the same. Having only cleared arcade mode with one character and never played this against a human foe, I can’t really tell you much about this game! I’m interested in playing Tekken 8, the current active game, so being who I am, I decided to give the original a shot to see what it’s all about.

My extremely quick appraisal is that it has some clear Virtua Fighter inspiration but certainly has plenty of identity of its own. I had fun playing through as Kazuya and learning some of his basic combos courtesy of the manual. I felt I was just starting to get a tiny bit of sense of what to do as the final boss kicked my ass over and over. When I finally beat him, I was treated to one of the greatest end cutscenes in video game history.

I’d love to mess around with this game with someone equally as scrubby as I am, but I doubt I’ll have many opportunities. In any case, it at least gives me the absolute most basic context on the series in case I decide to jump into the latest entry. Thanks, Tekken!
