| Toby Fox’s wildly popular indie RPG is rightly lauded for its charm and genre subversions, even if I don’t think it’s all that. |
you’re gonna have a good time.
A little story about monsters seemed like a great option to continue my October gaming, and the old indie-friendly Vita I busted out recently put Undertale back on my mind. It was a game I long avoided because of some combination of its popularity, fanbase, and my contrarian nature. Still, I figured it must have something to offer, so I never wrote off playing it. And indeed it does — Undertale is a fun and funny, short and sweet RPG with charm to spare.
Having said that, I think just about every take on the game has surely been written by now. Although its inspirations and antecedents are clear (such as Earthbound and Shin Megami Tensei), it nevertheless succeeds in subverting player expectations often and doing cute little meta commentary on games in general. I laughed often while playing the game.
It’s good. I really am not inspired to say much about it, but I will at least say as a one-time doubter that it’s certifiably enjoyable and worthwhile. Give it a go sometime if you’re the kind of guy like me that might avoid this sort of thing otherwise.
