| Monument Valley 2 is more Monument Valley and is better than the original in most ways. |
Coming Up
I feel pretty much the same about this game as I did the original Monument Valley, so take a look at this post for my thoughts there.
Monument Valley 2 does iterate on the ideas of the original a bit, though. It’s more beautiful than an already very pretty game, and its sound design and soundtrack are as good or better (the game opens, in fact, by saying that it is best played with sound).
It also has two protagonists, a mother Ro and her unnamed daughter. In some levels they travel together, but eventually the daughter is urged to travel alone. Themes of motherhood and childhood and maturation are explored in very vague and gestured but nice way.
Although I understand the intent of separating them, I do wish the concept of having to guide two characters through the labyrinths of Monument Valley had been explored a bit more deeply. But then, my primary complaint about the original was that it was never very difficult. That remains the case. Perhaps I scratched my head a bit more, but I was never stuck more than very briefly at any point. I suppose that’s just not what ustwo is shooting for with these games.
They’re still a visual and sonic delight and a pleasant enough way to spend an hour and change. That’s pretty good.
GAME CLEAR No. 267a: Monument Valley 2: The Lost Forest (2021, Mobile)
Clear Date: 12/6/25
I also finished the free additional level released for the original game in 2021. It’s one more nice little puzzle made to help raise awareness for forest conservation.
